Goodwins Pool
On 19th October 2007 500 carp and 50 tench were
stocked into Goodwins Pool. As 325 carp were stocked back in February the pool
has now received over 800 small carp this year!
Somerford Park Farm
We have been asked by the owners of Somerford Park
Farm to remind anglers that the double gates along the main gravel driveway must
be kept shut at all times. This is to prevent horses bolting up toward the main
road when horse and rider have become separated. An angler was recently spotted
coming back up from the river and leaving the gates open.
Annual Prize Giving 2007
This years' annual prize giving event will take place
on Saturday 10th November at The Vale Club, Canal St, Congleton starting at 8pm
Sponsored Fish-In
A Sponsored Fish-In will take place at Goodwins Pool on
Sunday 2nd September. The event is open to both senior and junior anglers with
the funds raised going to benefit the junior section of the club. Anglers will
meet at 9am with fishing between 10am and 4pm. Anglers can be sponsored in a
variety of ways such as the total number of fish caught, an amount per fish or a
set amount for taking part. There will be an added incentive of a tackle
prize to the junior angler who succeeds in raising the most sponsorship. Plans
are being made to provide refreshments on the day, including the possibility of
a barbecue, for both anglers and their supporters. Sponsorship forms are now
available from Terry's Tackle and Dave Booth (event organiser). Dave Booth can
be contacted on (01260) 281689.

as there are equestrian events in the field adjacent to the river:

Pegs Renumbered at Goodwins
Pool
During April & May 2004 there has been a significant amount of work
undertaken at Goodwins Pool. In the coming months the water level will increase
by up to 6 inches as an extra plate has been added to the overflow. The overflow
has been enclosed for safety reasons as well.
One of the consequences of undertaking some peg maintenance was the renumbering
of pegs as some old pegs are no longer used.
The changes are as follows:

Carp at Goodwins Pool
To clear up some of the rumours that have been circulating about the removal of
carp from Goodwins Pool here is the official news from the committee: During
January 2004 the society asked the Environment Agency to conduct a survey into
fish stocks at Goodwins Pool as part of an effort to understand the poor fishing
at the venue. During the course of a netting at the pool the agency advised the
society that the roach and rudd were showing signs of being stunted. They
also noted that there was an overpopulation of carp for the size of the water.
54 carp were being held in a net and following consultation with those committee
and other members present at the netting it was decided to transfer those fish
to another water. John Birch, the owner of Gawsworth Fisheries came and
collected the fish and transferred them to his own pools. The club subsequently
received payment for these fish. The money from the sale of those fish has been
put towards the repayment of loans taken out by the club a few years ago. The
largest carp caught in the net was returned into Goodwins Pool. It is estimated
that there are still some 200-250 carp in the pool.
Swettenham Stretch of River
Dane
It was with some regret that the society decided that as it was unlikely
that it was going to be allowed back on to the stretch at Swettenham that it
should be removed from the club card for 2004. It was clear that the owners were
not prepared to let us back on to the water despite the best efforts of various
committee members.

Notes from the AGM
AGM lifts all bait restrictions at Goodwins Pool, freezes membership fees
but imposes a night fishing ban. See more here
2003 Events Calendar published
The Events Calendar for 2003 has been posted to the site. See the full calendar
of events here
Angling Times Supercup 2003
We have been drawn away (yet again!) to Border Red, a team based at Border
Fisheries at Balterley neat Crewe in the first round of the competition. The
match will be held on Sunday 26th January on the Meridian Canal. Against a team
of venue experts this is going to be a hard match to win but the Meridian can
fish very hard in winter and that may help us if it turns into a
"scratching" match.
Swettenham Stretch of River
Dane
We have been asked by the owners of the land through which the river passes to
refrain from using the stretch until June 2003 because of continuing restrictions
on the movement of livestock following the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease
in 2002
Working Parties
There will be a working party at Goodwins Pool on Thursday 23rd May starting
at 6pm
All members who are available
to attend are asked to do so as many hands make light work! If you're able to
attend it would be helpful if you could bring along gardening tools such as a
spade, fork or rake. It is likely that
there will be further working parties at both Goodwins Pool and on the
Macclesfield Canal. Please keep an eye on the site for further news.
Angling Times Supercup
We have been drawn away to Ball Haye Green AC and JCB in the Angling Times
Supercup competition. The venue will be the Caldon canal at Cheddleton. The
match will be held in late January or early February. The team will be
restricted to 8 anglers due to the length of the stretch controlled by Ball Haye
Green A.C. Practice sessions will be arranged during January. It has been agreed
that once the date has been fixed the match will be fished on that day,
regardless of the conditions, in which case ice-breakers may be necessary!
Knypersley Reservoir
The committee of Congleton Anglers Society are pleased to announce that the
society is a member of the consortium that has acquired the fishing rights to
Knypersley Reservoir. The water is available to members with immediate effect
and will appear on the list of society waters for 2002.
Rule Change
A change to the Society's rules was made at the AGM. The rule change affects the
baits that may be used at Goodwins Pool during 2002. Follow the link to see
what the change is in detail.
AGM Confirmed
The recent EGM confirmed the switch of the AGM back to November each year. A
motion was also passed to hold the AGM for 2001 on Thursday 29th November at The
Vale Club, Canal Street starting at 8pm. A number of very important agenda
items, should they be passed, will have a profound effect on the future use of
club waters. All members are encouraged to attend.
Meetings Announcement
There will be an Extraordinary General Meeting at the Vale Club, Canal
Street, Congleton on Thursday 1st November 2001 starting at 8pm. This meeting
will propose moving the AGM to the last Thursday in November for 2001 and future
years and will also discuss other matters to be put before the AGM that will be
held on Thursday 29th November at the Vale Club starting at 8pm.

River Dane at Swettenham
Due to the re-imposition of foot and mouth restrictions in the Swettenham
area, this stretch will remain closed until further notice.
River Dane at Somerford Park
Farm
This stretch of the river is open and available to members. The owner of the stretch was contacted on Sunday 10th June and
confirmed that he had no problem with anglers using the stretch.
Summer match season set to start
Both the juniors and the seniors are about to start their respective summer
match programmes. The Summer
Evening League starts on Tuesday 29th May, The
Juniors Championship starts on Saturday 2nd June and The
Seniors Championship on Sunday June 10th.
Foot and Mouth
Until further notice, in addition to it being the close season, the
stretches of the River Dane at Somerford Park Farm and Swettenham are closed
because of the continuing foot and mouth epidemic. Re-opening of the waters on
or after June 16th is of course dependent on the containment of the disease and
the appropriate quarantine period. Details of the re-opening will of course be
posted to this news page.
Goodwins Pool remains open as it has direct access from the road.
Juniors go to Border Fisheries
The annual mid week match for the juniors, to be held on 8th August this year,
will take place at Border Fisheries near Betley. We have been very kindly
offered the use of 20 pegs at the water by the owner Mick Glover. With the
quality of fishing available at this popular fishery this is bound to provide
the juniors with one of the most exciting matches in the history of the junior
section.
Arrangements are currently being made to provide transport to and from
Border Fisheries by coach or mini bus. Our hope is that the transport will be
provided free of charge.
